Boilersuit Architectural Photography
The Boiler Suit by Heatherwick Studio is an innovative architectural façade designed for a biomass-fueled energy centre at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London. Completed in 2009, this striking design transforms a utilitarian structure into a work of art through its distinctive folded stainless steel panels.
The façade consists of over 108 folded triangular metal panels, resembling pleats of fabric, which create a sense of movement and fluidity despite the material's rigidity. These panels are perforated to allow airflow, essential for the building's ventilation while reflecting light dynamically to produce ever-changing visual effects. The design embodies a seamless blend of functionality and aesthetics, elevating the industrial energy centre into a sculptural landmark.
Heatherwick Studio's Boiler Suit exemplifies the firm’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of design, turning a practical necessity into an engaging architectural statement that enhances its urban environment.
